<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last spring I crated a pair of brass pendants pulled off a Japanese bulk carrier at the Sitakunda yard. The buyer in Oregon sent photos two weeks later. Both lights were up. One hung four inches lower than the other. He had measured down from his ceiling. His ceiling was not level. Almost none are. That habit cost him a Saturday on the ladder.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To install pendant lights, shut off the breaker and confirm the ceiling box carries the fixture weight. Screw the crossbar to the box, set your drop length, then join hot to hot, neutral to neutral, and ground to ground. Over a kitchen island, the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 inches above the counter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to Gather First</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lay everything out before you climb. Nothing burns an afternoon faster than a missing collar nut.</p>

<li>Wire strippers, pliers, screwdrivers</li>



<li>Wire connectors sized to your conductors</li>



<li>Tape measure, pencil, level</li>



<li>Stepladder and a helper</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most pendants ship with a mounting strap (the crossbar), a threaded nipple, a canopy, and a collar nut. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Install Pendant Lights Step by Step</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These five steps cover how to install pendant lights on a standard ceiling box.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Kill the power and prove it is dead</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Switch off the breaker, not just the wall switch. Then hold your voltage tester against every wire in the box. Some boxes carry a second circuit passing through.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Check what the box holds</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the National Electrical Code, a ceiling box used for lighting supports a luminaire of at least 50 pounds. Anything heavier hangs off the framing on its own support, unless the box carries a listing for that load. Boxes marked for paddle fans handle up to 70 pounds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salvaged marine pendants run heavy. A cast bronze body with a thick glass globe hits 15 pounds easily. A plastic old-work box clipped into drywall carries none of that safely. Swap it for a metal fan-rated box screwed to a joist or bar hanger.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Set the drop length</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Measure up from the finished floor, never down from the ceiling. Mark your target on the wall, then match the fixture to it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rod pendants use stems you add or remove. Cord pendants shorten inside the canopy: feed the extra cord up through the collar and lock it in the cord grip. Leave the cord uncut unless the instructions say otherwise. Sloped ceilings need an angled adapter so the canopy sits flush.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Make the connections</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fasten the crossbar to the box first, threaded nipple centered. Strip about three quarters of an inch of insulation. Join black to black and white to white. Then tie the fixture ground and the box ground screw to the bare or green house wire. Every metal pendant needs that ground path.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tug each connector, then fold the wires into the box in a loose coil so the canopy seats flat. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Seat the canopy and test</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lift the canopy over the nipple and thread the collar nut by hand until it bites. Snug it a quarter turn with pliers, no more. Restore power, switch on, then sight the fixture against a door frame and level the pair.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Getting Height and Spacing Right</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a kitchen island, the bottom of the shade belongs 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. I aim for 34 inches. It clears sightlines and still throws usable task light.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Space multiple pendants 24 to 30 inches apart, center to center. Keep the outer fixture at least 6 inches in from the island end. For ceilings above 8 feet, add roughly 3 inches of height per extra foot. Over a stair or entry, leave 7 feet of headroom underneath. Mark the spots in painter&#8217;s tape before you drill, especially when <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/creating-statement-kitchen-space-authentic-ship-lighting/">building a kitchen around authentic ship fixtures</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Extra Steps for a Salvaged Pendant</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Old shipboard fixtures need work before they hang. Rubber-insulated leads from the 1970s crumble the moment you flex them. Replace the internal wiring with heat-rated conductors and fit a fresh UL listed socket. Check the bulb rating stamped inside, since a sealed brass shade traps heat around an oversized lamp.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fit a warm LED and confirm your dimmer is rated for LED loads. Most <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/nautical-pendant-lights/">reclaimed ship pendants I ship from Chattogram</a> take a standard medium base after rewiring. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where a Pendant Cannot Hang</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Code keeps suspended fixtures away from water. No part of a pendant or cord-hung light belongs within 3 feet horizontally of a bathtub rim or shower threshold. That zone also runs 8 feet up. Above the tub itself and under that line, a fixture needs a damp location marking, or a wet marking where shower spray reaches it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Outdoors, a covered porch needs a damp rating and open exposure needs a wet rating. Gaskets harden with age, so check <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/are-nautical-lights-waterproof/">what old marine fixtures keep out</a> before one goes under an eave.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pendant installs go wrong in slow, quiet ways. A box that holds today and sags in a year. A drop measured off a ceiling that dips half an inch. Spend ten extra minutes on the box rating and the height marks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A crew dropped eight copper lanterns on my bench in Chattogram last month, cut loose from a Japanese bulk carrier. The wicks were still in them, stiff with old kerosene. One had a date scratched into the fuel font by hand. Lanterns are the oldest thing I trade in. They are also the item buyers understand least. So here is the straight version.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nautical lanterns are enclosed shipboard lamps that shield a flame or bulb behind glass and throw light where the crew needs it. The originals burned oil or kerosene through a wick, behind a thick ribbed lens that stretched the flame&#8217;s reach. Ships used them for anchoring, signaling, cargo work, and night rounds on deck.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Turns a Lamp Into a Lantern</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lantern is built to keep burning when the weather is against it. That is the entire design brief.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strip one down and you find the same parts nearly every time:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A fuel font, the reservoir holding the oil</li>



<li>A burner with a flat wick and a small wheel to raise or lower the flame</li>



<li>A glass globe or lens, usually ribbed in the pattern of a Fresnel lens</li>



<li>A vented top or chimney for hot gas to escape</li>



<li>A hinged door or lift-off lid for filling and lighting</li>



<li>A bail handle, plus loops for lashing the lantern down</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ribbed glass matters more than people expect. It gathers a small flame into a tighter beam, so the lantern reads far stronger at a distance. The chimney narrows toward the top. That pulls fresh air in at the base and holds the flame steady in wind.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Main Types of Nautical Lanterns</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Different jobs produced different builds. These come through my yard most.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Anchor lanterns.</strong> Hung forward when a ship sat at anchor, throwing white light through a full circle. Rule 30 of the COLREGs still applies today. A vessel at anchor shows an all-round white light in the fore part, plus a lower one near the stern. Under 50 meters, one all-round white light will do.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Sidelight lanterns.</strong> Red on the port side, green on starboard, each with an internal screen so the color only shows across its own arc. That color pairing is old and fixed, and I wrote separately on <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/why-are-nautical-lights-red-and-green/">why port carries red and starboard carries green</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Masthead and stern lanterns.</strong> White units, mounted high or aft, telling other crews which way a ship is heading.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cargo lanterns.</strong> Square bodies with four glass panes. Loops at the top and bottom let a crew lash them against rolling seas or lower them into a hold.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hand and inspection lanterns.</strong> Smaller, carried by the mate on night rounds, often with a wire cage protecting the glass.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nautical Lanterns Compared to Nautical Lights</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lantern is a specific object. A nautical light is the whole category.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anything fitted to a ship for light counts as a nautical light, sealed modern bulkhead and deck fixtures included. A lantern is the older, self-contained kind, built around a flame and a lens.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The word stuck around anyway. Shipyards and surveyors still call a navigation light housing a lantern, even with an LED sitting inside it. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">What They Are Made From</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Copper and brass dominate the older stock. Both survive salt air, and both grow a patina instead of rusting through. Galvanized sheet steel turns up on working cargo and cabin lanterns, because it was cheap and easy to fold. Aluminum came later, mostly on postwar fixtures.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The glass tells you plenty too. Clear cast lenses for white lights, ruby and green for sidelights, all thick enough to take a knock. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Are Nautical Lanterns Still Used at Sea?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, though rarely as the primary light. Electricity took that job generations ago.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The flame era is not ancient history. In 1848 the British Admiralty ordered steam vessels to carry red and green sidelights and a white masthead light underway. A single white light marked a ship at anchor. Every one of those was a burning wick.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The rules never fully closed the door. Annex I of the COLREGs states that non-electric lights should meet the same minimum intensities as far as practicable. Approval rests with each country&#8217;s maritime authority, so oil lanterns still appear on small traditional craft in some waters. On the ships I break, a spare set usually sits in a locker as backup.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Buying One for a Home</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of what I ship now goes onto porches, kitchen walls, and restaurant ceilings.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check authenticity first. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then decide on flame or wiring. Converting to electric is simple work for an electrician and safer indoors. Keep the burner in a box either way.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lantern is a simple machine that solved a hard problem. That is why the shape barely changed for a century. Buy one for that, not for the shine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last month I pulled a brass ceiling pendant off a Korean bulk carrier at the Sitakunda yard. The cage was bent flat on one side. The glass wore forty years of diesel film. That fixture spent its working life lighting a stairwell in the accommodation block. It now hangs over a kitchen sink in Oregon. The job changed. The fixture did not.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pendant lights are used for three jobs: task lighting over a work surface, soft ambient light, and a visual anchor for the room. Homes hang them over kitchen islands, dining tables, bars, entryways, and bedsides. On ships they lit engine rooms, galleys, and stairwells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Three Jobs a Pendant Does</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Task lighting comes first. The fixture hangs close to the surface, so light lands where your hands are. Chopping vegetables, reading a recipe, working at a desk.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ambient light is the second job. Hang three down a hallway and the whole corridor gets even coverage. Fit a frosted or opal shade and the fixture glows instead of spotlighting.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third job is pure focus. One sculptural piece over a console table does no real work. It tells your eye where to look. Nothing wrong with that.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where People Hang Them</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kitchen islands are the most common spot by far. Dining tables come next. After that: breakfast bars, entryways, stairwell voids, home offices, and bedsides in place of a table lamp.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Commercial buyers order the most. Bars like pendants because the light stays low and the room stays dark. Restaurants use them to mark each table. Retail shops hang them over display counters. Most of the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/nautical-pendant-lights/">reclaimed ceiling fixtures we pull from the yards</a> end up in exactly those rooms.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Pendant Lights Were Used For at Sea</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shipboard pendants did unglamorous work. They hung from the deckhead on a threaded stem or a short chain. They lit engine rooms, machinery spaces, galleys, mess rooms, workshops, and cargo holds.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Marine versions were built harder than anything sold for houses. Thick cast brass or aluminum bodies. Heat-resistant glass globes. Wire guards so a swinging spanner did not shatter the glass. Gaskets against steam and salt air.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many carried an IP rating under IEC 60529, and machinery-space fixtures were often flameproof. That construction is why a fifty-year-old ship pendant still works on a covered porch in Maine. Nobody designed it to be delicate.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hanging Heights That Work</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Height decides whether a pendant does its job or annoys everyone in the room.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a kitchen island, hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Over a dining table, 28 to 34 inches suits most rooms, since people sit lower there. In hallways and entryways, keep the bottom at least 7 feet off the floor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ceilings taller than 8 feet change the math. Add roughly 3 inches of hanging height for every extra foot of ceiling.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spacing matters too. Leave 24 to 32 inches between fixture centers, and keep the outer two at least 6 inches inside the island edges. Two pendants suit a 5 or 6 foot island. Three suit anything longer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Damp Rooms, Porches, and Bathrooms</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where people fail an inspection or worse.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A damp rated fixture handles humidity and condensation. Think bathrooms outside the shower, covered porches, laundry rooms, and basements. A wet rated fixture handles direct water: open decks, uncovered patios, shower spray.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Electrical Code also blocks off a zone. Under NEC 410.10(D), pendants, cord-hung fixtures, and lighting track are barred from a set area. That area runs 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the bathtub rim or shower threshold. It includes the space straight above the tub.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salvaged marine fixtures usually have the gasketing for damp spots. The seals are decades old, though, so I cover <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/are-nautical-lights-waterproof/">how well old marine fixtures hold back water</a> separately.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Before You Hang One</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Weight comes first. A cast brass pendant with a glass globe runs 4 to 9 pounds. A standard plastic ceiling box is not rated for that load. Use a listed fixture box or fan box anchored to a joist.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Old fixtures need new wire. Rubber insulation from the 1970s crumbles in your fingers, so <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/how-to-wire-nautical-lights/">rewiring a salvaged marine fixture for house current</a> is not optional. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Put it on a dimmer. Full output while you prep dinner, half output while you eat it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A pendant is a simple thing. It hangs, it aims light down, and it sets the mood of whatever sits under it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sort the height first, the moisture rating second, and the looks third. Do it in that order and you will not be drilling fresh holes in six months. Good luck with yours.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A buyer in Portland emailed me a photo last spring. He had hung two brass cargo pendants over his new island. Both sat right at eye level and cut his kitchen window clean in half. He had measured up from the floor. That was the whole problem. Twenty years of pulling lights off ships in Chattogram taught me one thing about pendants. The floor never matters. The counter does.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hang the bottom of each pendant 30 to 36 inches above the island countertop. On a standard 8 foot ceiling, that puts the fixture roughly 66 to 72 inches off the floor. Add 3 inches for every foot of ceiling height above 8 feet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Measure From the Countertop, Not the Floor</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The countertop is your reference point. Every installer I work with uses it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standard kitchen counters sit 36 inches off the floor. Add a 30 to 36 inch gap above that, and the bottom of your pendant lands between 66 and 72 inches high. That is close to eye level for most adults. It sounds too low until you stand there. At that height the glow drops onto the work surface instead of into your eyes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Measure to the lowest point of the fixture. On a salvaged brass pendant, that is the bottom rim of the shade or the glass globe. Not the socket, and not the canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adjust the Height for Your Ceiling</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ceiling height sets your starting number. The rule adds 3 inches of clearance per extra foot.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>8 foot ceiling: 30 to 36 inches above the counter</li>



<li>9 foot ceiling: 33 to 39 inches</li>



<li>10 foot ceiling: 36 to 42 inches</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sloped ceilings need one extra step. Keep the pendant bottoms level with each other even though the rods hang at different lengths. A sloped ceiling adapter keeps each fixture plumb instead of tilted.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Go Lower or Higher? Let the Fixture Decide</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 30 to 36 inch range is wide on purpose. Where you land inside it depends on the light itself.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stay near 30 inches when the shade is solid and opaque. Most reclaimed ship pendants fall here, because the cast brass housing throws light straight down. You get sharp task light on the cutting board. Small fixtures under 10 inches wide also handle the lower end well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Move toward 36 inches when someone in the house is over six feet tall. Do the same when the island has seating, faces a window, or opens onto a living room. Wide fixtures need the extra room too. Anything past 14 inches across starts to crowd the counter.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clear glass and bare filaments want the higher end. An exposed bulb at 30 inches sits in your sightline through dinner. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Spacing and How Many You Need</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Height only works when the spacing works with it.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Space pendants 24 to 30 inches apart, measured center to center. Thirty inches suits most kitchens.</li>



<li>Leave at least 6 inches between the end of the island and the center of the outer pendant. On long islands, 12 inches looks better.</li>



<li>Use two pendants on islands under 6 feet. Use three on islands over 6 feet.</li>



<li>Odd numbers read better than even ones once you pass two fixtures.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Center everything on the island, not on the ceiling joists. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Salvaged Pendants Weigh More Than the Box Expects</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reclaimed fixtures differ from showroom ones in one way that matters. They are heavy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A cast brass cargo pendant off a bulk carrier runs 12 to 25 pounds. Some of the larger deck fixtures I ship pass 40 pounds with the glass in place.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Electrical Code covers this in Article 314.27. A ceiling outlet box has to support at least 50 pounds. Anything heavier needs independent support from a joist or added blocking, unless the box carries a listing for that load.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plenty of older kitchens still have thin plastic nail-on boxes never rated for fixture support. Check yours before you hang 20 pounds of brass from it. A metal pancake box screwed into a joist handles the weight without complaint.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The same care applies to <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/how-to-install-nautical-lights-the-right-way/">installing marine fixtures the right way</a>. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Test the Height Before You Drill</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cut a cardboard circle the width of your pendant. Tape it to a string and hold it at 30 inches, then 33, then 36.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now move around. Stand at the sink. Sit at the island. Walk in from the next room. One of those heights stops bothering you, and that is your number.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buyers who skip this step are the ones who write me two weeks later asking how to shorten a chain. Ten minutes with cardboard saves that. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Working out how high to hang pendant lights over an island takes a tape measure and some patience. Start at 34 inches above the counter, live with the cardboard for an afternoon, then commit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Old ship fixtures reward that patience. They hung in a passageway for thirty years and will hang over your island for another thirty. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">A buyer in Portland sent me a photo of a brass ship pendant hanging over his island last spring. The fixture looked great. It also hung about eight inches too low, and he had already knocked his head on it twice.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Weigh the fixture, then mount it to a ceiling box marked for fixture support or straight into a joist. Hang the bottom of the pendant 30 to 36 inches above a counter or table. Keep at least 7 feet of clearance over any walkway. Space multiple pendants 24 to 30 inches apart, center to center.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Weigh the Fixture First</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A salvaged pendant is not a hardware store pendant. Cast brass and bronze fixtures off old cargo ships run heavy. I have pulled small passageway pendants at 6 pounds and cast cage lights that push past 25.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Put yours on a kitchen scale before you plan anything else. The National Electrical Code lets a ceiling outlet box support a luminaire of 50 pounds or less. Anything heavier needs support independent of the box, unless that box is listed for the weight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most pieces I ship sit well under 50 pounds. Weight still decides your box and your anchors. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Get the Ceiling Support Right</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check the box you already have. Boxes rated for fixture support say so on the carton or inside the box, and they take 8-32 screws. Shallow pancake boxes and thin plastic boxes were often set for a smoke alarm or a light shade. Neither one belongs under 20 pounds of brass.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If a joist sits behind the box, use it. If the box floats in open drywall, feed an adjustable brace bar through the opening and hang the box from that. The bar spans two joists and carries the load.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drywall anchors alone hold nothing over time. I have seen a bronze light come down at two in the morning because someone trusted a pair of plastic toggles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fit the strap, thread your nipple or hickey, and land the ground wire first. Old ship fixtures usually need a new socket and cord too, so rewire the piece on a bench before it goes overhead. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hanging Height That Actually Works</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Measure up from the surface, never down from the ceiling. Over a kitchen island or a dining table, the bottom of the pendant belongs 30 to 36 inches above the top.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tall ceilings change the math. Add roughly 3 inches of height for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet. A 10 foot ceiling puts that same pendant closer to 36 to 42 inches above the counter.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a sink, go a bit higher, around 36 to 40 inches. That keeps the shade out of your sightline to the window.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anywhere people walk underneath, the bottom of the fixture needs at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor. Entryways, hallways, and covered porches all follow that rule. If a spot fails the 7 foot test, move the light rather than shortening the chain.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Spacing Two or Three Pendants</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep 24 to 30 inches between pendant centers over an island. Hold the outer fixtures at least 6 inches in from the island ends.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two pendants suit a 5 or 6 foot island. Three fits past 7 feet. Mark the centers with painter&#8217;s tape and stand back before you drill anything.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Chain, Cord, or Rod</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chain gives you the most control with old fixtures. Open a link with two pliers, pull what you don&#8217;t need, and keep the spare links in a bag. Someone will want that height back one day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Never let the wire carry the weight. The chain takes the load, and the conductor weaves loosely through the links with slack at the canopy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes the box sits in the wrong spot. A swag hook driven into a joist lets you shift the fixture sideways, then run the chain back to the canopy. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Porches and Damp Spots</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A covered porch calls for a fixture rated for damp locations. Anything open to rain needs a wet location rating. Marine lights were built for salt spray, but the gasket in a 40 year old fixture is usually hard and cracked.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Replace the gasket and check the glass seat before you hang one outdoors. It also pays to understand <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/are-nautical-lights-waterproof/">how weathertight these old ship fixtures actually are</a> once they leave the water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Last Checks Before You Patch the Ceiling</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hold a level against the canopy and the shade. Old pieces rarely hang true on the first try, and a bent chain link is usually why.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Polish the brass while the fixture is still on the table, because <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/cleaning-brass-ship-lights/">scrubbing decades of grime off brass</a> overhead is miserable work. Then test the switch and the dimmer with the bulb you plan to keep in it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thought</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Support and height carry this whole job. Get those two right, and a 60 year old light hangs over your island for another 60 years. Most of the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/nautical-pendant-lights/">reclaimed pendant fixtures pulled from shipbreaking yards</a> have already outlived the vessels they lit. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last month I pulled a caged ceiling light out of the engine room of a bulk carrier here in Chattogram. Cast brass shell, thick glass dome, four coats of gray paint over the original finish. A buyer in Oregon hung it above her kitchen sink and called it a nautical pendant light. On the ship, nobody called it that. It was the light over the workbench.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nautical pendant lights are ceiling fixtures that hang from a rod, chain, or cord. They use shipboard construction: a cast metal body, thick tempered glass, a protective cage, and a sealed gasket. Some are genuine fixtures salvaged off working vessels. Others are new lights built to copy that look.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Makes Nautical Pendant Lights Different</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The answer is engineering, not decoration. A ship fixture gets built for vibration, salt air, engine heat, and deck washdown.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Look at the parts. The housing is cast brass, bronze, or marine grade aluminum instead of stamped sheet metal. The glass is thick, often ribbed or domed. A rubber gasket sits in a machined groove. A threaded ring clamps that glass down instead of three small screws.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shipboard lighting follows IEC 60092-306, the international standard for luminaires on ships. It calls for metal housings on fixtures installed outdoors. That is why one of these weighs five to fifteen pounds while a hardware store pendant weighs two.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where These Fixtures Come From on a Ship</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most hanging fixtures come from spaces below deck. Engine rooms, cargo holds, steering gear compartments, workshops, and mess rooms all use overhead lights on short pipe stems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Open decks work differently. A loaded ship rolls hard, so deck lighting bolts flat against the deckhead or a bracket. Nothing swings.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That means plenty of stock sold as a pendant started life as a deckhead or bulkhead fitting. My workshop adds a stem, chain, or cord and a new canopy. Converting a fixture is normal work in this trade. A seller just has to say so, and I do. If you want a fixture that hung as a pendant on the ship, ask me for engine room or cargo hold stock.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Materials, and How They Age</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brass and bronze fill most of my shelves. Both build a brown or green patina and handle coastal air well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cast aluminum shows up on newer ships because it saves weight. Galvanized steel comes off working boats and rusts at the seams once the coating wears through. Copper is rare and priced that way. How brass, bronze, and aluminum age near salt water decides which metal belongs on an exposed porch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Weight tells you plenty on its own. Thin, light metal usually means a reproduction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Spot Genuine Salvage</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check for a maker plate first. Wiska, Daeyang, Kokosha, Shengan, and Oceanic turn up constantly in Chattogram yards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then look for wear nobody fakes cheaply. Layered paint in the casting corners. Pitting around the cable gland. A gasket groove worn oval. Thread wear on the lens ring. Telling an old shipboard fitting from a copy comes down to those small signs of use.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ratings, Wiring, and Your Electrician</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">IP66 means dust tight and protected against powerful water jets. It does not mean the fixture survives being submerged. A gasket that sat in an engine room for 30 years no longer holds its original rating either. Treat any salvage piece as unrated until it gets fresh seals, which is the honest answer to how much water these fixtures keep out.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For a US home, the rating you need is a UL location listing. Damp rated covers a sheltered porch, a soffit, or a steamy bathroom. Wet rated covers anywhere rain reaches the fixture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The National Electrical Code expects installed fixtures to be listed and labeled. Salvage almost never carries that label. Have the fixture rewired with UL listed wire and a new socket, ground the metal body, and confirm the ceiling box carries the weight. Wiring a shipboard fixture for house current takes a licensed electrician about an hour. Pay for that hour.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where They Work in a Home</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a kitchen island, hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Space multiple pendants about 30 inches apart, center to center. Over a hallway or walkway, leave at least 7 feet of floor clearance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stairwells, entryways, bar counters, and covered porches all suit these fixtures. The heavy ones need a solid anchor, so plan the mounting before you fall in love with a piece. Some buyers get stuck between a cage light and a smooth dome. Choosing an industrial hanging fixture without regret comes down to where the light hangs and how much glare you accept.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A nautical pendant light is a working tool that got a second life indoors. That is the whole appeal. The salt stains and the tool marks came from somewhere real, and no factory finish copies them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last month I pulled two brass fixtures off the same bulk carrier here in Chattogram. One came off an exposed deck wall near the accommodation block. The other came out of a corridor three decks below. Both are round. Both are brass. Both bolt flat to steel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A bulkhead light is named for how it mounts. It bolts flat to a bulkhead, which is the vertical partition wall of a ship. A passageway light is named for the job it did, which is lighting the interior corridors. Most passageway lights are bulkhead mounted, so the two categories overlap. The real split shows up in sealing, body depth, and light spread.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bulkhead Lights Are Named for the Wall They Bolt To</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On a ship, a bulkhead is a structural partition. Any sealed fixture bolted to that partition earns the name.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the heavy ones. Cast body, rubber gasket, thick glass globe, and usually a metal cage over the glass. Shipyards put them where a fixture takes abuse. Exposed deck walls. Engine room boundaries. Machinery spaces. Outside stairwell landings.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is why <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/what-are-bulkhead-lights/">cast wall fixtures built for ships</a> look overbuilt next to household lighting. Shapes vary too, and the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/what-are-the-types-of-bulkhead-lights/">round, oval, and caged body styles</a> each suit a different spot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Passageway Lights Are Named for the Job They Did</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passageways are the interior corridors linking cabins, mess rooms, stores, and engine spaces. Crews call them alleyways.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A corridor fixture has one hard constraint. It cannot stick out. Alleyways on a cargo ship run narrow. A crew member in a boiler suit does not need a brass globe at shoulder height. So the body sits shallow and tight to the wall.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Light spread matters just as much. A corridor needs an even wash along its length, not a bright pool under each lamp. That is why <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/what-are-ship-passageway-lights/">corridor fixtures pulled from merchant ships</a> so often carry frosted or prismatic glass. Oval bodies show up in that role again and again.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Five Places the Two Fixtures Split Apart</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Sealing.</strong> Interior corridor fixtures often sit around IP20 to IP44. Weather facing bulkhead fixtures run IP56 and higher. IEC 60529 defines that code. IEC 60092-306 covers shipboard luminaires and expects outdoor housings to be metal rather than plastic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Depth.</strong> A passageway fixture usually projects four to six inches from the wall. A deck bulkhead fixture projects further and weighs more.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Glass.</strong> Exposed fixtures use thick clear globes for maximum output. Corridor fixtures lean on frosted or ribbed glass to soften glare in a tight space.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cage.</strong> Both wear guards. On a corridor fixture the cage stops knocks from passing crew. On a deck fixture it stops boarding seas, cargo gear, and dropped tools.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Shape.</strong> Oval bodies push light along a corridor. Round bodies throw an even circle and suit open walls.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Both Fixtures Share</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More than most buyers expect. Cast brass, bronze, or aluminum bodies. A backplate that carries the wiring. A gasket seated under the glass ring. A cage that unscrews for bulb changes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They share builders too. Daeyang, Wiska, Pauluhn, Oceanic, and Shengan stamped both types. The gasket does the same work in each, so <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/are-bulkhead-lights-waterproof/">how much water a sealed fixture really keeps out</a> depends on condition, not on the name.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Safety Role Only One of Them Carried</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Corridor fixtures often sat on the emergency circuit. SOLAS calls for supplementary electric lighting in passenger public spaces and alleyways. It has to run three hours so the way to an escape route stays visible.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One point is worth clearing up. The glowing escape marking near the floor is not a passageway light. Low location lighting is a separate system, fitted no more than 300 mm above the deck under IMO Resolution A.752(18) and ISO 15370. A deck bulkhead fixture almost never carried that duty.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which One Belongs on Your Wall</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buy on exposure, not on the label.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pick a bulkhead fixture for porches, garage walls, coastal exteriors, and anywhere rain reaches. Pick a passageway fixture for hallways, tight landings, and above kitchen counters where a deep body gets in the way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two things decide the result more than the category does. First, the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/how-high-to-mount-bulkhead-lights/">right mounting height for a wall fixture</a>. Second, honest condition of the gasket and threads. That is a third category people fold into the same pile.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The two names answer two different questions. One tells you where the fixture bolts. The other tells you what it lit. Stop treating them as rival categories and the choice gets simple.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most bulkhead lights that come into my yard in Chattogram still have the old bulb inside. Usually a fat incandescent, blackened at the tip, sitting in a porcelain socket that smells faintly of scorched varnish. Buyers ask me what bulb goes in a bulkhead light once they get it home. The fixture rarely tells them. On plenty of these housings the wattage label corroded away decades ago, somewhere between the Persian Gulf and the beach here.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most bulkhead lights take a standard screw-base bulb: E26 in North America, E27 in 220 volt countries, or a B22 bayonet on older British-built fixtures. An enclosed fixture rated LED between 6 and 12 watts suits nearly every one. Stay under the wattage printed on the housing and match the bulb to your supply voltage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start With the Socket, Not the Bulb</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Open the fixture and look inside. The socket decides everything after it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Medium Edison screw is the most common holder by far. That is E26 in the United States and E27 across Europe, Asia, and Australia. The two thread into each other easily, but they follow different electrical safety standards: E26 for 120 volt supply, E27 for 220 to 240 volts. Buy the version certified for your country&#8217;s current.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ships built in Britain and India often carry B22 bayonet holders, the two-pin push and twist type. Small fixtures sometimes use E14 or E12. The <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/what-are-the-types-of-bulkhead-lights/">various housing styles I pull off ships</a> vary in socket size too, so measure rather than assume.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Watch the Wattage Cap on the Housing</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The number cast or stamped on the fixture is a heat limit, not a brightness suggestion. Caps of 40, 60, and 75 watts are typical. That figure protects the socket, the internal wire insulation, and the rubber gasket behind the glass.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An incandescent bulb turns most of its energy into heat. Push 100 watts through a 60 watt housing and the insulation cooks, the paint blisters, and the socket contacts scorch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">LED changes the arithmetic. A bulb sold as a 100 watt equivalent draws roughly 14 actual watts. Actual draw is what counts against the cap, not the equivalence claim on the front of the box. Read the fine print. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why the Bulb Needs an Enclosed Fixture Rating</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A bulkhead light is a sealed box. Thick glass, a cast housing, a compressed gasket, and often a protective cage. Air barely moves inside, which is exactly <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/are-bulkhead-lights-waterproof/">how the gasket and glass keep water out</a> in the first place.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trapped heat is hard on LEDs. The driver in the base holds heat-sensitive electronics. Overheat it and you get early failure, flicker, or a color shift as the phosphor degrades. Manufacturers test for this and print &#8220;suitable for enclosed fixtures&#8221; on qualifying packages. No such wording means treat the bulb as open-fixture only.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wet location listing is a separate rating. Outdoors you want both on the same bulb.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Bulb Goes in a Bulkhead Light Outdoors?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Outdoors I fit an enclosed fixture rated LED, wet or damp location listed, drawing 6 to 12 watts. That gives roughly 450 to 1,000 lumens. Plenty for a doorway, a porch, or a dock post, and the low heat protects old wiring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Color temperature matters more than people expect. 2700K reads warm and flatters aged brass and bronze. 3000K stays warm but looks cleaner near steps and gates. I skip 5000K on salvaged fixtures. Blue-white light against old metal looks cheap. Think about <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/where-to-place-bulkhead-lights-inside-and-out/">where these fixtures sit best inside and out</a> before settling on a color.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bulb Shape and Clearance Behind the Glass</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Measure the space before ordering. A standard A19 bulb (A60 in metric markets) fits most bulkhead housings. Shallow ship globes need a smaller G45 round bulb or a C35 candle shape.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Leave air between the bulb and the glass. Contact creates a hot spot and cracks the lens over time.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Frosted bulbs behind clear ship glass cut glare, which suits the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/how-do-bulkhead-lights-work/">way these fixtures spread light across a wall</a>. Clear filament bulbs look better behind an open cage than behind flat prismatic glass.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ship Voltage Versus House Voltage</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Accommodation lighting on large ships runs at 110 or 220 volts AC, stepped down from the main switchboard. Small vessels and emergency circuits run 12 or 24 volts DC.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So the bulb still in a salvaged fixture reflects that ship, not your house. A 24 volt bulb on household mains dies instantly. Check the old bulb and the nameplate first, then handle the <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/how-to-wire-nautical-lights/">rewiring of an old salvage fixture</a> before fitting anything new.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bulbs I Skip</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Halogen: too much heat inside a sealed housing.</li>



<li>CFL: slow to brighten, weak in cold air, poor life in enclosed spaces.</li>



<li>Unlabeled bargain LEDs: no enclosed rating, no safety listing, short life.</li>



<li>Non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit: flicker and buzz.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thought</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Get the socket right, respect the wattage cap, and buy an enclosed fixture rated LED. That combination keeps a fifty year old fixture safe and lit for years without cooking its own wiring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last month I pulled fourteen passageway lights off a 1974 Japanese bulk carrier here in Chattogram. Twelve came out of a single corridor on one deck. The other two came off a stairwell landing. That ratio tells you most of what you need to know. I write the compartment name on masking tape before a fixture leaves the ship. Buyers ask where it hung, and I like giving a straight answer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passageway lights sit inside a ship&#8217;s accommodation block, bolted to the bulkheads of alleyways, cabin flats, and stairwell landings. You also find them in the engine room casing, at stores approaches, and along exterior boat deck walkways. Most hang at head height, spaced every eight to twelve feet.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where Are Passageway Lights on a Ship? Deck by Deck</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The accommodation block holds the bulk of them. On a cargo ship that is the boxy white superstructure near the stern. Crew sleep, eat, and move through it every day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inside, the corridors are called alleyways. Each one runs fore and aft, or port to starboard, linking cabins to the mess room and the stairs. Fixtures line one wall at even spacing. In a corridor only thirty inches wide, they never sit on both sides. Shoulders need the room. These are the same sturdy brass and bronze fittings that once lit merchant corridors, so the layout was always about clearance first.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cabin flats and door approaches</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A flat is the small open area where several cabin doors meet. Builders put one fixture straight across from the busiest door. Nobody should fumble for a handle in shadow at 0400.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I find the most worn units here. Brass gets polished smooth by decades of passing sleeves.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stairwell landings</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every landing carries at least one light. Below the lowest open deck, stairs are the primary escape route, so that light stays on around the clock. Fixtures usually sit above the handrail on the inboard wall.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Landing units take more abuse than corridor units. Look for dented cages and chipped glass rims. If the naming confuses you, my breakdown of stair fittings versus corridor fittings sorts out the terms.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Engine Room Casing and Working Spaces</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Machinery spaces use the same fixture family with different glass. The casing stairs, the control room approach, and the steering gear compartment all carry them. Down there the glass is usually ribbed instead of clear. Ribbed glass softens glare where oil mist coats every surface.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stores approaches, paint lockers, and pump room entrances get one each. These come out filthy, but the castings are almost always sound underneath. The way crews depended on them aboard working cargo vessels explains why the housings were built so heavy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exterior Walkways and the Boat Deck</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not every passageway light lives indoors. Exterior walkways on the boat deck carry sealed versions with higher IP ratings, often IP56 or better. Salt spray and deck washdowns demand it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Exterior units feel noticeably heavier in the hand. Thicker glass, deeper gaskets, more bolts through the backplate. Wiska and Daeyang made many of the ones I handle. Sealed builds are what I recommend for a porch, and our reclaimed corridor and wall fixture range shows which ones qualify.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mounting Height and Spacing on Board</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Height stays consistent because human bodies are consistent. Most fixtures sit between six and seven feet off the deck. That clears a walking crew member and keeps glass away from elbows.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spacing runs roughly eight to twelve feet along an alleyway. Shipboard corridor targets are modest, around 50 to 100 lux for safe transit. Builders spaced fixtures for even coverage rather than raw brightness. Deckheads are low, so light bounces sideways off pale bulkhead paint. The same reasoning behind sensible mounting height decisions applies in a hallway at home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Escape Route Rules Behind the Layout</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Placement was never guesswork. SOLAS treats accommodation alleyways and stairs as means of escape, so they stay lit continuously with backup supply. On passenger ships, public spaces and alleyways need supplementary lighting that runs at least three hours under any condition of heel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers add Low Location Lighting. Lit or photoluminescent strips run no more than 300 mm above the deck along the full escape route, including angles and intersections. IMO Resolution A.752(18) and ISO 15370 govern the testing. On those vessels you get overhead fixtures plus a glowing line near your feet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How I Read a Fixture&#8217;s Origin</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dirt tells the story. Engine casing units smell of oil and show heat scorch inside the socket. Exterior units carry white salt crust in the gasket groove and pitting across the cage. Interior alleyway units arrive cleanest, with brass polished on one face only, the side that faced traffic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Backplate shape helps too. A deep box usually means an exterior run with conduit. A flat plate usually means interior steel. When a pile arrives and I cannot tell one housing family from another, comparing the two common wall types settles it fast.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final Thoughts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the deck layout makes sense, the question of where passageway lights are on a ship stops being a mystery. Alleyway, landing, casing, walkway. Four zones, thousands of fixtures. Tracing a light back to the compartment it lit is still my favorite part of the work. Enjoy the hunt.</p>

Buyers ask me what else they can do with one, so here is the full picture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passageway lights are used to light narrow interior corridors, stairwells, and crew walkways on ships. They give steady, low-glare light in tight steel spaces without sticking out into the walking path. Today people also use them as hallway sconces, stairwell lights, entry lights, and covered porch fixtures.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Passageway Lights Are Used For on a Ship</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main job is safe footing below deck. A cargo ship has no daylight in its interior corridors. Those corridors connect the cabins, the mess, the engine room, and the storage compartments.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shipboard lighting design usually targets 50 to 100 lux in passageways and on ladders. That is enough to walk safely with a coffee mug and a wrench. It is not bright working light, and it was never meant to be.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The flush body matters as much as the light. A deep fixture in a 900 mm wide corridor becomes a head injury. That is why the housing sits close to the bulkhead and the glass hides inside a cage. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Escape Route and Emergency Duty</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those same corridors are escape routes, so the lighting carries a safety role too. Under SOLAS rules, emergency lighting at muster stations and boarding points must keep running for three hours after main power fails.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Escape routes also get marked separately. Regulations call for lighting or photoluminescent strips no more than 300 mm above the deck, at every angle and intersection of the route. That is low location lighting, and it works when smoke fills the upper half of a corridor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So a standard corridor fixture is the everyday layer. The emergency circuit and the low strips are the backup layer. Both exist because a dark passageway on a burning ship kills people.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What People Use Passageway Lights For Today</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most fixtures I ship out now go into houses, not vessels. These are the uses that actually work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hallways and stairwells.</strong> This is the closest match to the original job. Space them 6 to 10 feet apart, same as on the ship.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bedside and bunk reading.</strong> The cage throws a nice shadow pattern, and the light stays out of your partner&#8217;s eyes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bathrooms and laundry rooms.</strong> The gasket and sealed glass handle steam better than a fabric shade ever will.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Entryways and covered porches.</strong> A cast brass body survives coastal air for decades. It develops patina instead of rust.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Docks, sheds, and workshops.</strong> Bump-proof by design. The cage was built for exactly this abuse.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Boats still in service.</strong> Plenty of my buyers own working trawlers and yachts. The fixture goes back to doing its old job.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you pick a spot, it helps to know <a href="https://marinesalvageantiques.com/what-are-ship-passageway-lights/">the parts inside a ship corridor fixture</a> and which ones need replacing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Jobs These Lights Do Not Do</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A passageway light is not a room light. It holds one bulb behind thick glass and a metal cage. Both soften the output.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many restored brass fixtures with pressed glass globes cap out around 25 watts of incandescent heat. A hot bulb in a sealed globe cooks the socket and cracks the glass. LED lamps solve that, since a bright LED runs cool at low wattage.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Match the Use to the Rating</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This part decides whether the fixture lasts. Marine passageway fixtures commonly sit around IP54 in original form. That handles splash and humidity, not a jet of water.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For US and Canadian installs, the label matters more than the IP number. Damp location listing covers sheltered spots like a covered porch, a bathroom away from the spray, or a basement. Wet location listing covers direct rain on an open wall or post. When in doubt, go wet rated.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Old salvage arrives with dried gaskets and brittle cloth wire. Nothing I pull from a scrapped hull is ready for a wall as is. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">A passageway light was built to do one small job very well. Light a narrow space, take a beating, and keep working for decades. That is why it fits a home hallway so naturally.</p>
